The Author, Unfiltered
Hi, I’m Betsy.
I have been narrating my life out loud since I was old enough to form full sentences. Long before I knew it could be called “writing,” I was already doing it. If a room gets quiet, I will fill it. If a moment gets awkward, I will comment on it. If there is a story buried in the mess, I will absolutely find it… probably trip over it… and then make you sit down while I tell you the whole thing with unnecessary detail.
I was raised in Missouri in a beautifully imperfect blended family that taught me two very important things: laughter and loss can share the same space, and you can survive more than you think you can. My life has been full of deep love, unexpected grief, awkward medical adventures, stubborn faith, and grace that showed up long before I had myself together.
I am a mom to three sons, a bonus mom to three incredible daughters, and “Gigi” to ten grandchildren who have completely wrecked my ability to be calm in public. My people are my heartbeat. We are loud, layered, and slightly dramatic. It’s fine. We call it personality.
I love to shop. Some call it retail therapy. Others call it a problem. I call it supporting the economy. I am also deeply committed to reality TV (anthropological research, obviously). And when I’m in the mood, I love to cook, and I can. Just not every night. Let’s not get carried away.
My faith didn’t become real to me until later in life, and when it did, it grew roots. I have learned that God does not wait for us to become polished before He shows up. Some of my holiest moments happened in sweatpants. A few involved hospital wristbands. Most involved surrender.
I write about family, faith, healing, heartbreak, humor, and the beautiful chaos of being human. I believe grace is sturdier than we think, laughter is holy, and God can use every unedited chapter of our story.
Giggles, Grit & Grace: My Life Unfiltered is my debut memoir. It is my invitation to you to stop trying to look impressive and start being honest. There is freedom in that. I promise.
I live in Missouri with my husband and family, where dignity is optional, seconds are encouraged, and grace is always welcome.
